Editorial
As Tom Relph, Career Development Group President, made clear in the editorial in the Special 110th Anniversary edition of Impact, education and development of our members has always been central to the group. This is another issue in which many of the articles started life as training sessions put on by the Career Development Group for its members and the wider profession.
Those of you who made it along to our National Conference entitled “Follow my Leader or Taking the Lead” may have attended one of the workshops, TFPL's “Manager or Leader – is there a difference?” or Anne Poulson’s “Leading Effective Change in Your Organisation” - both of which have been turned into articles by the workshop leaders and published in this issue. We also feature reviews of this event, as well as the Student Conference held in Leeds in March, the Career Development Group East of England division seminar on “Managing Your Career” and a workshop on cross-sectoral co-operation that we put on at CILIP's bi-annual conference - Umbrella - in Manchester in June which I'm sure many of you will have attended.
In addition, this issue we feature an article with a unique perspective on Chartership: what happens if your submission doesn’t pass? This is not a subject that has been much explored in the literature before, and even now the taboo is such that the article’s author has chosen to remain anonymous. For any of you who may be in this position, or may find yourself in this position in coming months, Ms Steiner looks at the issue sensitively and provides excellent tips to ensure that your re-submission does not suffer the same fate.
Finally, this issue features a thought-provoking look at the profession from Bob McKee, CILIP’s esteemed Chief Executive, on the Information Society. Again this is adapted from a speech that Bob has given at our Student Conferences in recent months.
Education and training are just a few of the themes on which the Career Development Group focuses. We are also renowned for our international work, some of which we will be showcasing, along with relevant literature, in our next issue which will be devoted to the international theme, so look out for that in early November. Meanwhile, please keep the interesting ideas and articles coming.
