As we write this in February, although it’s not spring quite yet, it does feel as though spring is in the air as we have had some unseasonably warm weather recently. In keeping with the season we have been thinking about new beginnings. This is our first edition of Impact as the new Honorary Editors and it has been an exciting fresh challenge for us, gathering the inspiring articles together to help you kick-start your own resolutions - we have an article from Carol Barker, Honorary Learning Coordinator, on why you need a PPDP, which will help you do just that. We also have several articles which highlight the importance of seizing opportunities: a report on the experiences of the Travelling Librarian Award winner and a report from the recipients of two British Library bursaries.
We also have an eye-opening account of a library environment which is a closed book to most people: Rachel Daniels’s article on a recent CDG visit to Gloucester Prison Library. Continuing the theme of prison libraries, Maria Cotera, Honorary International Officer, updates us on the latest news from the Zambia Prisons Library Project, a very worthwhile initiative which CDG is supporting. We hope that you can help us with this ongoing fundraising effort.
Plus, importantly, we have a brand new president, Amanda Quick, who introduces herself in this issue. She has also incorporated a quirky quiz into her article to keep you all amused!
All that’s left is to express our thanks to the outgoing editor, Catherine Davies, for all her hard work over recent years. We hope we can maintain her exacting standards and continue to produce a high quality journal which speaks to all members of the group at every stage of their career.
