Editorial
Welcome
to the first issue of Impact of the New Year, and thank you
to those who have just renewed your subscription for choosing
the Career Development Group as one of your CILIP Special Interest
Groups.
2005 is an excellent year to choose the Career Development Group,
as it's our 110th anniversary in July. Originally the Association
of Assistant Librarians, we are still going strong 110 years
later, still serving the needs of both new professionals, and
those who are more established, alike. We have been called different
things over the years, had different internal structures and
relationships with other bodies, but the commitment to the broad
aims and objectives of the Group has always remained. We continue
to be the only special interest group which is multi-issue,
multi-sector and multi-focus in the broadest terms. This, coupled
with our commitment to acting upon the concerns of our membership,
means that we are in an unparalleled position to serve the needs
of the widest possible variety of CILIP members, both in the
UK and abroad.
The next
issue of Impact will be a special commemorative edition, in
which we will revisit some of the issues which have been dealt
with in this publication over the years, and ask what relevance,
if any, they still have in modern librarianship and information
work. The summer issue will therefore be published a bit later
in the summer than usual.
In this
issue we are publishing the latest winning entries for the
CILIP/Online Information Personal Development Award. An award
which recognises the achievement of CILIP members from all
sectors who have recently gained Chartered status by demonstrating
their personal and professional development. This is one of
the only awards in the information sector which is aimed specifically
at new professionals. On the same theme, this issue also features
articles on the New Professionals Discussion Group. This is
an initiative which grew out of a brainstorming session at
IFLA 2004 in Buenos Aires, which will be of interest to many
of our members.
This issue
also contains an update from Alison Cooke Matutu, our VSO
volunteer who is helping to develop an HIV/AIDS resource centre
in Zambia. If foreign climes interest you, then look out for
a special international themed issue later in the year.
Outside
of Impact there is a lot going on for the Career Development
Group this year. As well as all the usual courses available
(you will notice that the dates section of this issue is bulging
at the seams!), we will also be heavily involved with administering
the New Framework which comes into force on April 1st. We
want to continue to offer the same level of support to those
going through this process as we traditionally have for Chartership
candidates. As mentioned above, 2005 marks the 110th anniversary
of the Group. To celebrate we will be holding a number of
special events, and publishing a commemorative edition of
Impact keep checking our website for further details.
We will also be getting involved with the bi-annual Umbrella
conference in Manchester at the end of June, where we will
be presenting the Career Development Groups Martin Award,
sponsored by Intellident Ltd. This award is presented for
the best article by a new professional published in Impact
over the last few years.
If you
would like to be considered for a Martin Award in the future,
then please do send in your articles for publication
the journal could not exist without regular contributions
from our readership.
