About the Group

What is the Career Development Group?

The Career Development Group is a Special Interest Group within CILIP, the Chartered Institute for Library and Information Professionals (formerly known as the Library Association). The Career Development Group developed out of the Association of Assistant Librarians. Our membership includes professionals from across a wide range of information work, in all sectors. We are involved in a wide variety of activites, including courses, fund-raising to support international projects, production of a journal, Impact, and supporting chartership.

Our mission statement can be found here.

The committee meets four times a year, with two of those meetings as National Councils which offer the chance for representatives from the Divisions to attend and make their points of view known. .

Chartership, Certification and Revalidation

Who is my local Candidate Support Officer (CSO)?

Each regional Division of the Career Development Group in the UK has its own CSO. If you are not sure who to contact, the Honorary Learning Coordinator Carol Barker will be able to help you.

How can the CSO help me with my Chartership?

The CSOs are there to help candidates by providing information, advice and guidance, as well as organising free courses locally that will help candidates at any stage in the Chartership, Certification or Revalidation process. Find out more about the CSO Network

When is the next Chartership/Certification/Revalidation course/meeting?

Chartership, Certification and Revalidation courses and events
are held throughout the country on a regular basis. There are also many informal groups throughout the country which meet semi-regularly; details are posted on the lis-cilip-reg mailing list.

How can I see examples of past Chartership submissions?

Contact your local CSO: each one has copies of successful Chartership, Certification and Revalidation submissions that you can borrow.

Can you provide me with a mentor?

The CILIP website
has lists of available mentors. You could also contact your local CSO, who may be able to put you in touch with other professionals who have offered to act as mentors.

How do I join the Career Development Group?

I am already a member of CILIP

This is simple and only takes one phone call or email!

If you wish to change one of your existing memberships over to the Career Development Group, then all you need to do is contact the CILIP membership department (details below), quoting your name and your CILIP membership number.
If you prefer, you can add membership of the Career Development Group as an extra SIG, although CILIP will charge you a nominal fee for this.

All you then need to do is to remember to choose the Career Development Group on your CILIP membership renewal form, by writing A in the SIG box.
